MA DE MOI ZEL

This table began as a request from a client and grew into a benchmark of Artbdesign’s range. The request was to create an organic design and usable table that matched the style of the surrounding space. Sleek, elegant, fine lines allow this contemporary table to blend beautifully with a classic lounge room or a chic minimalist surrounding.  Creating this table required 6 months and 5 important steps. From initial meeting with the client and design team,

creation of the first model protptype and then to the 3D plaster cast version. Step 4 was the fiber glass mold and finally the sourcing of the best quality Gelcoat, used in luxury yacht by the maritime industry. The finish allows the table to be used outdoor or indoor setting. Endless number colours and finishes. Today the same product can be reproduced in 10 days, endless number colours and finishes. Custom size table may be made in 2-3 months. (height 45cm x diameter 55cm)

The fiberglass mold process begins with an object known as the plug or buck. This is an exact representation of the object to be made. The plug can be made from a variety of different materials; certain types of foam are commonly used. After the plug has been formed, it is sprayed with a mold release agent. The release agent will allow the mold to be separated from the plug once it is finished. The mold release agent is a special wax, and/or PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol). Polyvinyl alcohol, however, is said to have negative effects on the final mold’s surface finish. Once the plug has its release agent applied, gelcoat is applied with a roller, brush or specially-designed spray gun. The gelcoat is pigmented resin, and gives the mold surface a harder, more durable finish. Once the release agent and gelcoat are applied, layers of fiberglass and resin are laid-up onto the surface. The fiberglass used will typically be identical to that which will be used in the final product. In the laying-up process, a layer of fiberglass mat is applied, and resin is applied over it. A special roller is then used to remove air bubbles. Air bubbles, if left in the curing resin, would significantly reduce the strength of the finished mold. The fiberglass spray lay-up process is also used to produce molds, and can provide good filling of corners and cavities where a glass mat or weave may prove to be too stiff. Once the final layers of fiberglass are applied to the mold, the resin is allowed to set up and cure. Wedges are then driven between the plug and the mold in order to separate the two. Advanced techniques such as resin transfer molding are also used. Making a component[edit] The component-making process involves building up a component on the fiberglass mold. The mold is a negative image of the component to be made, so the fiberglass will be applied inside the mold, rather than around it. As in the mold-making process, release agent is first applied to the mold. Colored gelcoat is then applied. Layers of fiberglass are then applied, using the same procedure as before. Once completed and cured, the component is separated from the mold using wedges, compressed air or both.

I HAVE NO SPECIAL TALENT
I AM ONLY PASSIONATELY CURIOUS…

MA DAM

The more mature taller MADAM, following the exact same process as the MA DE MOI ZEL. This piece works superbly at a stand up cocktail party or a corner piece. The secret here was to create a very stable base, meaning no issue with glass ware or a precious vase. The strength and durability means it can also be used in a hospitality environment. The finish allows the table to be used outdoor or indoor setting. Endless number colours and finishes. (height 110cm x diameter 55cm)

SP’OUSE

The lower coffee table (table de salon) version was the next obvious adaption to the range. The challenge here was the making an oval shaped mold (hand designed), crafting an original mold requires patience and careful craftsmanship. Smooth elegant oval shape fits beautifully with a rounded lounge setting. The strong stable base (height 45cm) permits the table section to be spacious and perfect to support drinks or object even to the outer edge (length140cm x width80cm). Originality, style and finesse describe this table. The finish allows the table to be used outdoor or indoor setting. Endless number colours and finishes. The table can be reproduced 2-3 weeks.

MISS MANGO

As per the SP’OUSE, creating the mold here was the challenge. This “Jewel in the crown piece” in the range. Not only the strength, stability and robustness. The key here was to create a piece that was both original and unique. From the first glimpse of an idea “can it be done”. Designing and creating something this unique was a great challenge to ArtBdesign. The result means today that the impossible is now possible. (height 45cm x length 130 cm x  width 70 cm/50 cm)

AVANGARDE

Slim design and conceived for a contemporary modern look. Incorporating both TEAK wood and galvanized steel. A stylish consul table that allows a beautiful piece of art to display but not overpower the theme of the room. The three support legs stabilize the consul without the clutter and gives a symmetrical appearance and the consul top floats. The varnish is also waterproof and suitable for outdoor use. The legs were covered in a EPOXY and a lacquer afterwards, to improve its water resistance.

Two part epoxy coatings were developed for heavy duty service on metal substrates and use less energy than heat-cured powder coatings. These systems provide a tough, protective coating with excellent hardness. Some epoxy coatings are formulated as an emulsion in water, and can be cleaned up without solvents. Epoxy coatings are often used in industrial and automotive applications since they are more heat resistant than latex-based and alkyd-based paints. Epoxy paints tend to deteriorate, known as « chalking out », due to UV exposure. (height 90 cm x length 170 cm x width 45 cm)

Polyester epoxies are used as powder coatings for washers, driers and other « white goods ». Fusion Bonded Epoxy Powder Coatings (FBE) are extensively used for corrosion protection of steel pipes and fittings used in the oil and gas industry, potable water transmission pipelines (steel), and concrete reinforcing rebar. Epoxy coatings are also widely used as primers to improve the adhesion of automotive and marine paints especially on metal surfaces where corrosion (rusting) resistance is important. Metal cans and containers are often coated with epoxy to prevent rusting, especially for foods like tomatoes that are acidic. Epoxy resins are also used for decorative flooring applications such as terrazzo flooring, chip flooring, and colored aggregate flooring. Epoxies were modified in a variety of ways, Reacted with fatty acids derived from oils to yield epoxy esters, which were cured the same way as alkyds . Typical ones were L8(80% linseed, D4 (40% Dehydrated castor oil). These were often reacted with styrene to make styrenated epoxy esters, used as primers. Curing with phenolics to make drum linings, curing esters with amine resins and pre-curing epoxies with amino resins to make resistant top coats. One of the best examples was a system of using solvent free epoxies for priming ships during construction, this used a system of hot airless spray with premixing at the head. This obviated the problem of solvent retention under the film, which caused adhesion problems later on.

O – PENMIND

Similar table top as the AVANGARDE, the base was created via 3D to make a smooth open table design that perfected the open look. Laser cut and bending with a hand soldered edge. Bending the base was the first challenge, strong bold structure that supports a simple, original brut teak consul table top. The openness and light design gives and impression of space and clarity. (height 90 cm x length 170 cm x width 45 cm)

TRA | DITION

The most traditional of three designs. Each table top is the same material and size. The base is the inspiration behind the 3 different models. This is able to be used in all type of environments, classic and Avant Garde. This table comes from the early 17th Century furniture. These tables were relevant in France and today are being renovated. The brushed wood and style gives a notion of antiquity and age. Unlimited number of colours and finishes, this table can be reproduced to suit a special colour theme or style of a room. (height 90 cm x length 170 cm x width 45 cm)
